YOSHITOMO
NARA + GRAF
21
September 2007 - 6 January 2008

CAC Málaga, the art centre
financed by Málaga City Council, presents
the first exhibition in Spain by the renowned
Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara + graf. On this
occasion, the creative unit presents an installation
specifically produced for CAC Málaga, featuring
a drawing cabine with works. Torre de Málaga
(Tower of Malaga), will be open to the public
until 6 January 2008.
Japanese art comes to the city of Málaga.
Under the title Torre de Málaga, the city’s
Centre for Contemporary Art presents the first
project undertaken in Spain by Nara, the most
influential Japanese artist of the moment. In
the words of CAC Málaga Director Fernando
Francés, “visitors to the show will
be able not only to admire the work of the most
important Japanese artist of the moment, but also
to appreciate the latent creativity in the installation
created by the graf team”. Thisinstallation,
built especially for CAC Málaga, consists
of a wooden structure, or hut, made from recycled
materials and inspired by the building of the
Art Centre, which used to be a wholesales market.
At the base of this construction, visitors to
the show will find a space from which they can
see into a room modelled on Nara’s own studio.
The installation will also feature drawings, paintings
and sculptures by the artist, as well as other
objects. The exhibition ends with a DVD showing
the latest joint projects undertaken by Nara +
graf in cities all over the world.
Yoshitomo Nara’s works
merge into the graf team’s installations
to form a whole. According to Santiago Olmo, these
installations, usually imperfectly finished wooden
houses or huts, look like something between temporary
and defenceless.
